This is the kind of movie that looks lighted by the full of the moon, which is a good trick during an eclipse. Sam is relieved when Mr. and Mrs. Ulman return, until they don't seem prepared to give her the traditional ride home. She also meets Mother (Danielle Noe), who is considerably more spry than advertised. And Mother's room turns out to be far, far different than you might expect -- and dark, dark.

Victor (Bowen) at first seems like just a creepy guy lurking around the house, but quickly makes it clear that Sam will end this night in a bloodyfight for her life.... The Devil's assistant pokes their backs before instantaneously teleporting to different areas of the room, confusing the pair and causing one to flee. The second stays and has several other tricks played on him, such as furniture moving around and the sudden appearance of a skeleton. The cavalier is unfazed, using a sword to attack the skeleton, which then turns into a bat, then into Mephistopheles, who conjures four spectres to subdue the man. Recovering from the spectres' attack, the man is visibly dazed and is brought the woman from the cauldron, who impresses him with her beauty. Genre horror director Ti West is a scary-movie veteran with four features to his credit and he's still not out of his 20s. His latest is an 80s-style shocker which promises much at first – particularly with a pastiche-grindhouse credit sequence that Tarantino himself might admire. Newcomer Jocelin Donahue plays a hard-up college student who takes a babysitting job at a spooky old house for this weirdo rich guy, played by Tom Noonan. It's only once she's arrived, that this man confesses it isn't a child she has to watch over, but his elderly mother. Inevitably, the eerie atmosphere of the deserted house is far creepier than the subsequent grossout action.
